“…20 Noteworthy were the low serum-zinc levels before surgery in the otherwise healthy young patients included in our trial. This was most likely due to the local infection because infections in general can cause hypozincemia [52][53][54] and the serumzinc levels increased significantly in our study following surgical removal of the abscess beyond the time point of serumzinc depression due to the surgical trauma. 55 Metronidazole is often prescribed for malodorous wounds.…”

“…In subsequent literature, the effects of isoflurane on trace elements have been investigated. (15,16) According to the results of the study conducted by Alarcon (17) ; it has been pointed out that the significant increase in serum Zn + occurred in the postoperative period and the authors have concluded that alterations in the serum levels of these elements predominate only after a considerable time, and the variations in serum cation con-centrations very likely result from surgical trauma and not from isoflurane anesthesia. In our study since we could not have evaluated the levels of trace elements for a considerably longer duration, and the effect of surgical trauma could not have been excluded similar to Alarcon's study, it is hard to blame anesthetic agents for these variations in the levels of trace elements.…”

“…(24) Since propofol, which was introduced in 1977 eliminated most of the disadvantages of the other intravenous agents and achieved widespread use, we have preferred to perform the anesthesia induction in both groups, and maintenance in TIVA group with this wellknown intravenous agent. (17) Higgins investigated potential effects of propofol on trace elements detected in critically ill patients. However its impact on patients in the operating rooms has not been studied.…”
