Effect of Integrated Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment and Problem-Solving Therapy on Body Mass Index and Depressive Symptoms Among Patients With Obesity and Depression

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Coexisting obesity and depression exacerbate morbidity and disability, but effective treatments remain elusive. OBJECTIVE To test the hypothesis that an integrated collaborative care intervention would significantly improve both obesity and depression at 12 months compared with usual care. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS The Research Aimed at Improving Both Mood and Weight (RAINBOW) randomized clinical trial enrolled 409 adults with body mass indices (BMIs) of 30 or greater (Ն27 for Asian adults) … Show more

“…364 Additionally, new evidence from the RAINBOW trial further supports the use of CC models for improving both physical and mental health outcomes in people with common mental disorders and cardiometabolic comorbidities. 365 However, it is important to note the above evidence pertains to evaluations of CC models in high-income settings. The importance of further development and evaluation of integrated care approaches for LMIC settings are discussed in Part 5.…”

“…[12][13][14] Recently, the Research Aimed at Improving Both Mood and Weight (RAINBOW) trial reported that an integrated collaborative care intervention, as compared with usual care, led to significantly improved weight loss and depressive symptoms through 12 months among primary care patients of both sexes who had obesity and depression. [14] Similar to prior trials showing effectiveness of behavior therapy in either of these conditions alone [15][16][17][18] or in related multiple chronic conditions-such as depression and diabetes or under a formal data sharing and use agreement that provides for a commitment to the following: (1) using the data only for research purposes and not to identify any individual participant, (2) securing the data using appropriate computer technology, which needs to be specified, (3) destroying or returning the data after analyses are completed, (4) accepting reporting responsibilities, (5) abiding by restrictions on redistribution of the data for commercial purposes or to third parties, and (6) proper acknowledgement of the data resource. Data sharing request shall be submitted to the Institutional Review Board for the University of Illinois at Chicago whose contact information is below.…”

“…Weight gain and depression problems can be treated with an integrated combination of body care and problem-solving therapy, or by using antidepressant drugs that have significant results in weight loss and recovery in 12 months. However, the size of the effect is simple, and the clinical size is uncertain (Ma et al, 2019). PST can also help stabilize glucose and cholesterol for up to four months in individuals with depression (Villamil-Salcedo et al, 2018).…”

“…Weight gain and depression problems can be treated with PST within 12 months, which proves more effective compared to usual care. However, the effect size is simple, and clinical measures are not consistent (Ma et al, 2019). Besides, PST can help stabilize glucose and cholesterol (Villamil-Salcedo et al, 2018).…”
