Effect of Insecticides and Herbicides Applied to Soil on the Development of Plant Diseases: Ii. Early Blight and Fusarium Wilt of Tomato

Abstract: The effects of several insecticides and herbicides on the development of early blight and Fusarium wilt of tomato were investigated. Young tomato plants were grown in sand to which solutions or suspensions of these chemicals were applied repeatedly before the foliage was inoculated with spores of Alternaria solani and either before or after the roots were inoculated with spores of Fusarium oxysporum f. lycopersici. On the basis of lesion counts, increased early blight development resulted from applications of … Show more

“…A ação de inseticidas utilizados no controle de pragas sobre algumas doenças já havia sido verificada anteriormente. Richardson (1959) observou que aplicações de aldrin e endrin no solo reduziram a murcha do tomateiro, causada por Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici e que aldrin, dieldrin e endrin diminuíram a incidência foliar de Alternaria solani Sorauer.…”

“…The change in fungal disease severity could be related to the direct effect of the herbicide in question on the microorganisms themselves, a change in the plant resistance to a given pathogen, or other effects related to the general microflora 1,2,3,4,5,8,10,11,12,13,14,15 The present communication is intended to report the effect of three herbicides extensively used to control weeds on the development of Rhizoctonia disease in cotton.…”

“…THE increasing use of herbicides has led to interest in the possible effects of these chemicals on plant diseases, and Richardson (1959) has shown that many insecticides and herbicides can affect the development of diseases. Applications of simazine have resulted in increased severity of Botrytis fabae on broad beans (Grummer, 1963), Ustllago maydis on maize (Yakovleva, 1964) and sugarcane mosiac virus (Adsuar, 1961).…”
