“…Food getting lodged between teeth (psychological discomfort domain) had the highest impact in the periodontitis group as compared to the healthy/ gingivitis group. This is in agreement with Saito et al (2010) who detected that pain, eating and chewing, and psychologic function were identified as compromised OHQoL domains (29). The negative impacts faced across this broad range of domains demonstrate that the effect of periodontitis on quality of life of this selected Malaysian population was considerable.…”

“…Although important, self-perceived oral health is decidedly under-evaluated, especially in persons with chronic periodontal disease, who may experience no pain symptoms and thus are less likely to seek treatment (14,16,20,21). Information on patient values and beliefs may be important in planning effective interventions for oral health, which is closely linked to general health and thus affects QoL in individuals (12,14,22).…”

“…In relation to this issue, we have been conducting a series of studies focusing on the oral health-related quality of life in patients with periodontitis, and reported the effects of non-surgical initial therapy 17) and periodontal surgery 18) . Comprehensive periodontal care is our clinical commitment, and we intend to feed back our research findings into our clinical practice.…”
