Effect of individualized communication skills training on physicians’ discussion of clinical trials in oncology: results from a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundDiscussing randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with cancer patients is one of the most challenging communication tasks a physician faces. Only two prior Communication Skills Trainings (CSTs) focused on RCTs in oncology have been reported. Their results demonstrated the need for further improvement. We developed and evaluated an enhanced, individually-tailored CST focused on improving physicians’ communication during discussions of RCTs.MethodsThe CST focused on personal learning goals derived from vide… Show more

“…For this purpose, we built upon a previous work in which we developed a communication skills training (CST) consisting of a workshop and one subsequent individual coaching session (ComOn CST). This previous training was evaluated with standardized patients for specific situations, such as the transition from curative to palliative [ 48 , 49 ] and the discussion of information about randomized controlled trials [ 50 , 51 ]. The content of the new training was expanded so that consultations including various types of physician-patient-conversations in oncology would be considered.…”

“…First, any intervention that attempts to increase the potential for ACP in primary brain tumours must be multifaceted and attend to the multiple conditions of avoidance. Training, such as advanced communication programmes, 39 may be important in supporting healthcare professionals to overcome difficulties, develop confidence and skill and helping them to identify and affect windows of opportunity. However, training is simply not enough on its own, and without more complex interventions addressing the social and structural conditions we highlight, avoidance is likely to persist.…”
