Effect of immersion disinfection of alginate impressions in sodium hypochlorite solution on the dimensional changes of stone models

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of the immersion of alginate impressions in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution for 15 min on the dimensional changes of stone models designed to simulate a sectional form of a residual ridge. Five brands of alginate impression materials, which underwent various dimensional changes in water, were used. A stone model made with an impression that had not been immersed was prepared as a control. The immersion of two brands of alginate impressions that underwent small dimensional c… Show more

“…Disinfectants must be effective as antimicrobial agents while not adversely affecting the dimensional accuracy or feature fidelity of the impression material and the resulting gypsum cast (7). The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that alginate impressions be sprayed with an ADA-approved disinfectant and then sealed in a plastic bag for the recommended disinfection time (1,2). Spray disinfection of alginate impressions with 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or 2% glutaraldehyde reportedly did not cause adverse dimensional changes or surface deterioration of stone models produced from the impressions (2,8).…”

“…Quality of diagnostic stone models has a critical role in the orthodontic treatment plan and evaluation of the treatment results. 4,5 The aim of this study was to evaluate the dimensional stability of five irreversible hydrocolloid impression materials according to the different storage condition and periods. The null hypothesis of this study was that the storage conditions and periods would not affect the dimensional stability of irreversible hydrocolloid impression materials.…”
