Effect of IGL-1, a new preservation solution, on kidney grafts (a pre-clinical study)

Abstract: Ischemia-reperfusion injury conditions short-term and long-term graft function. The effects of the inversion of K+ and Na+ concentrations and substitution with polyethylene glycol for hydroxyethyl starch in University of Wisconsin (K-UW) solution were evaluated in isolated perfused rat kidneys and in autotransplanted pig kidneys. In the rat model kidneys were cold-stored for 24 h in K-UW or Na-UW or Na-PEG UW solutions (IGL-1 solution). Fractional sodium reabsorption and glomerular filtration rate was better i… Show more

“…IGL-1 has been tested for kidney preservation, showing that it performed equally to UW and could be superior for ischemically damaged kidneys (14,15). Similar results were reported for liver preservation (16 -18).…”

“…The use of IGL-1 may reduce these adverse effects. IGL-1 has a low potassium concentration, which can prevent vasospasm (10,22,37); instead of HES, IGL-1 contains PEG35, which does not cause erythrocyte aggregation. PEG can also reduce platelet adhesion and shaping a clot with reduced contractility (41).…”

“…The emerging IGL-1 solution has shown beneficial outcomes in the preservation of kidney (17,22) and liver (23,24,26,27) and may represent an advance in optimizing pancreatic graft preservation. To the best of our knowledge, the described protocol, which includes 16-hr cold ischemia in a porcine whole PT model that closely resembles clinical PT, is the first study to assess the effectiveness of IGL-1 solution in PT.…”

“…The first preservation solution is the University of Wisconsin (UW) solution, which is currently the most widely used kidney preservation solution [1]. The second preservation solution is Institut Georges Lopez-1 (IGL-1), which was developed by the Lyon Group in 1997 [13][14][15][16][17][18]. With regards to the present study, a few aspects of these preservation solutions are important.…”
