Effect ofCitrus maximajuice on fasting blood glucose, lipid profile, liver enzyme and body weight

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effect of Citrus maxima juice on fasting blood glucose, lipid profile, liver enzyme and body weight of alloxan-induced diabetic adult wistar rats. Design/methodology/approach The fruits were thoroughly washed with potable water. They were peeled; the epicarp and seeds were removed. Fruit juice was extracted from the pulp. Animal experiment was carried out using 21 adult male wistar rats weighing about 110-130 g. The rats were categorized into three groups (A-C), wit… Show more

“…The two studies above showed that both the pulp and peel of red dragon fruit possessed promising blood lipid-lowering efficacy. Furthermore, after administration with Citrus maxima juice for 14 days, male Wistar rats showed a significant decrease of TC and TG, along with an increase of HDL-C [ 75 ]. Furthermore, feeding with fresh bitter melon fruit juice for 4 weeks markedly dropped down the levels of blood glucose, TG, TC, and LDL-C in hyperglycemia rats compared with the initial levels, but the HDL-C level was dramatically elevated.…”

“…Current study revealed the negative effects of HFD-induced obesity against vitamin D status, and therefore, the need for life style modification or diet improvements in preventing the side effects of HFD is further warranted, as previously suggested by Bensalah et al (2018). Previous studies have suggested numerous supplements for improving cardiometabolic risk factors, body weight or oxidative stress markers in animal models (Ani and Aginam, 2018;Mir et al, 2019); however, our study, for the first time, specified the role of vitamin D in improving the inflammatory status in the renal tissue and renal injury in HFDinduced vitamin D deficiency.…”

“…It is the largest of all citrus which is commonly used for ornamental purpose especially in West Africa. Many health benefits such as antitoxic, cardiac stimulant, appetizer, anti-diabetic, and hypocholesterolemic have been attributed to Citrus maxima pulp and juice (Ani and Aginam, 2018;Ontengco et al, 1995).…”
