Effect ofBacillus cereusvar. Toyoi andSaccharomyces boulardiion the immune response of sheep to vaccines

Abstract: In this study we evaluated the effects of Bacillus cereus var. Toyoi and Saccharomyces boulardii on the immune response of lambs to Escherichia coli K88ab and Bovine Herpes Virus type 5 (BoHV-5) vaccines. Thirty, 3-month-old lambs were randomly grouped in three lots of 10 each and vaccinated at days 0 and 30 of the experiment. They grazed on the same pasture and were fed ad libitum twice a day with commercial sheep feed supplemented with either B. cereus var. Toyoi at a concentration of 1 )10 6 viable spores g… Show more

“…Another important property of probiotics is their capacity to modulate immune responses. Some experiments showed that probiotics have immunomodulatory effects depending on the characteristics of the immunogen [ 28 30 ] and the adjuvant used in the vaccines [ 31 ]. The effect of probiotics on the enhancement of the titers of specific and natural antibodies in the serum and gut of chickens against the tetanus toxin was already reported [ 32 , 33 ].…”

“…Rodrigues et al [ 29 ] reported that with the aid of such tools, they designed new versions of the rCPB protein and produced an unpurified protein (rCPB-C) with high productivity, solubility and antigenicity, which is another promising option for the development of recombinant vaccines that induce a more lasting humoral immune response. Probiotics can act as immunomodulators and enhancers of the immune response of animals after vaccination [ 30 , 31 , 32 ]. In a recent study, ewes immunized with a formulation containing the rETX protein of C. perfringens , after supplementation with Bacillus toyonensis BCT-7112T, showed a 2- to 3-fold increase in total serum levels of anti-rETX IgG compared to the group of no supplemented animals [ 33 ].…”

“…In neonate calves supplemented with Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. plantarum or L. plantarum only, a significantly slower decrease in serum IgG was observed compared to the control group 83 . The yeast probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii at 10 6 and 10 7 CFU/g in the supplemented feed enhanced blood IgG in lambs following a vaccine against BoHV-5 virus and Escherichia coli, thus enhancing the humoral immune response 84,85 . On the contrary, supplementation of L. plantarum to dairy goats did not impact blood IgG, IgM, and IgA concentrations 86 .…”
