Effect of Hypothermia and Pentobarbital Anaesthesia on the Distribution of Cardiac Output in Rabbits

Abstract: The distribution of cardiac output was studied in unanaesthetized rabbits, in rabbits anaesthetized with pentobarbital and kept at normal body temperature for 2 or 4 h, and in anaesthetized animals kept at a body temperature of 25 °C for 30 min or 2 h. The distribution of blood flow to the different organs of the rabbits was determined by 131I-labelled macroaggregates of albumins, given intracardially in a single dose. The radioactivity of the organs was determined directly in organ samples, or the … Show more

“…These pharmacokinetic data of practolol have been collected deliberately in conscious rabbits because the barbiturate anesthesia can highly modify the distri bution of cardiac output (1). The single dose of practolol injected here (5 mg/kg), has been reported to cause no striking hemodynamic changes in the rabbit ( 12).…”

“…However, little information concerning the pharmacokinetics of practolol in the rabbit is available. More over, because of the presumed participation of the renin angiotensin system in the development of different types of experimental and clinical hypertensions (3) and the suggested use of propranolol and various 0-blocking drugs in the treatment of renal hypertension, because of their plasma-renin activity lowering 1 This work was supported by grant No. 20.314 from the 'Fonds de la Recherche scientifique médicale de Belgique'.…”

“…A cholinergic blockade under these conditions had only a moderate vasodilating effect in the anterior uvea. Previous studies on the effects of barbiturate anesthesia on regional blood flow in rabbits did not include determinations of the blood flow in the eye (Aardal, Svanes & Egenberg 1973).…”
