Effect of host plant alternation on some adaptive enzymes of the bird cherry–oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.)

Abstract: Changes in the activity of some adaptive enzymes of the bird cherry-oat aphid R. padi after transfer from primary (bird cherry) to secondary (triticales) host plants were assessed. The following groups of enzymes were studied: (1) transferases-glutathione S-transferase (GST) and UDP-glucosyltransferase (UDPGT); (2) antioxidant enzymes-superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT); (3) oxidoreductases-polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (PX); and (4) glucoside hydrolases--and -glucosidase. The activity of t… Show more

“…The β-glucosidase activity is strongly related to the chemical composition of the host plant. Changes in the activity of GST and β-glucosidase were observed as a result of changing the host from primary to secondary in R. padi [75]. Similar relationships were observed in C. tujafilina after changing the host plant [71].…”

“…The increase in GST activity is an essential indicator of the adaptation of insects to changes in xenobiotics, including phenols, present in plants [ 17 ]. Changes in β-glucosidase and GST activity were noted in migration from primary to secondary host of winged R. padi females [ 38 ] and after the change of host plant in C. tujafilina [ 37 ]. β-glucosidase activity is strongly associated with the chemical composition of the host plant.…”

“…S. avenae is a monophagous and monoecious insect infesting a large array of plants of the family Poaceae (Gao and Liu, 2013;Li et al, 2013;Svobodová et al, 2013), whereas the life cycle of oligophagous R. padi involves seasonal migration between two groups of taxonomically distant host plants. The primary hosts of R. padi are a few members of the genus Prunus, and the secondary hosts include a broad range of cereals and grasses (Stoetzel and Miller, 2001;Aslan and Uygun, 2005;Łukasik 2009;Coulette et al, 2013).…”
