Rasasastra is a branch of science deals with metals and minerals, Shilajathu (Bitumen) is one of the important herbo mineral drug in Rasasastra. It is also known as black bitumen or Asphaltum punjabinum, considered as mineral pitch. Shilajathu is widely used for treating number of diseases in various systems of medicine. It is an exudate of rocks having blackish brown colour, has been mentioned in Samhitas since ancient times. Shilajathu was described by almost all the Acharyas in their classical text books. Especially in Rasasastra text books, Shilajathu was included under Maharasa, Uparasa, Dhatu varga, Suvarnadi varga, Paradati varga. Description of different types of Shilajathu and their properties was seen in classics. Acharyas explained about the genuinity test of Shilajathu, various Sodhana procedures also mentioned for removing the impurities and make fit for consumption. Marana (incineration) and Satvapatana (extraction of essence) are not necessary for Shilajathu, whereas Guna (property), Karma (action), Matra (dose) of Shilajathu was available in literatures. For curing various diseases Shilajathu administered along with different Anupanas (adjuvant), it is considered as panacea. It is the one of the ingredients of various Ayurveda formulations and has Rasayana (rejuvenation) property. In this article, an attempt has made to summarize the wide range of description of Shilajathu available in various Ayurveda classics.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common, yet complex endocrine disorder affecting women in their reproductive years and is a leading cause of infertility. The prevalence of PCOS is increasing with most women impacted falling in the 20-30 years age group which is estimated to be 5-10% women in general population who are undergoing nutritional transitions due to westernized diets and lifestyle. The pathophysiology of PCOS involves multi-systemic dysfunction; namely reproduction, endocrine, and metabolic. The symptoms of PCOS vary from person to person. They could range from irregular menstruation, hirsutism, obesity and hair loss in some cases and long term can lead to complications. This syndrome cannot be included under any particular condition in specific and can be correlated in Ayurveda with Artavakshaya, Anartava and Pushpaghni-jataharini based on its lakshanas, which are Vata-kapha pradhana rasa pradoshaja vyadhi. In this condition adopting Vata-kaphahara and Pitta vridhikara ahara-vihara, proper Shodhana and Rasayana karma along with life style modification can control the onset and further progression of the disease. So in the present context, an attempt is made to explain the effect of Rasayana in female infertility w.s.r to PCOS.

In the Pharmaceutical process of different forms of medicines raw material & its quality plays an important role. During ancient time Vaidyas were themselves used to collect the raw materials herbs based on their occurrence and organoleptic characters, i.e., typical taste, texture, smell, color, and there types after selection they utilized them in preparing medicines. Based on their own observations, principles of drug processing and ideal quality of finished product, etc., have been documented by them. The principles were developed based upon the scientific parameters prevailing in those days. Materials and Method: Raw Shilajatu was subjected to Shodhana and Shodhita shilajatu was subjected to analytical study. The required materials for the process were collected from the Pharmacy of BLDEA's AVS Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya pharmacy Vijayapur, analytical lab. Raw drugs were purchased from Dorle and Sons retailer from Kolhapur Maharashtra. Shilajatu shodhana was carried out according to reference mentioned in Rasaratna samuchaya. Analytical tests concern Indian Pharmacopeia methods were followed. Result: Raw Shilajatu took 5 ½ hour to 6hour in Shodhan procedure in both batches. Three days for drying. In analytical tests physical constants like pH ash value, solubility, specific gravity, moisture content etc result values were under normal limit.
