Effect of Herbicides on Soybean Thrips (Sericothrips variabilis) in Soybeans (Glycine max)

Abstract

Field studies were conducted to determine the effect of several herbicides on soybean thrips numbers in soybean. Adult soybean thrips numbers in the preplant-incorporated and preemergent herbicide treatments were observed to be either greater than or equal to, but never less than, numbers in the control plots. Larval soybean thrips numbers were not observed to be affected by the preplant-incorporated or preemergent treatments. The postemergence herbicide treatment of naptalam plus dinoseb consistently reduced both adult and larval soybean thrips numbers. The other postemergent treatments did not affect numbers consistently.

Effect of post-emergence herbicide injury and planting date on yield of narrow-row soybean (Glycine max)

Huckaba et al (1988) compared to the other herbicides, but there was no difference between the remaining two herbicides. Helms and Halvorson (1991) found similar reduction in soybean height by aciflurofen but did not note any effect of imazethapyr on soybean height.…”

“…However, they commented that in more northern areas with short growing seasons there may not be enough time for recovery from injury. Huckaba et al (1988) found that aciflurofen injury did reduce yield in weed-free soybean, and York et al (1991) found no effect on yield from early injury by aciflurofen. Soybean growers in PEI try to avoid herbicides that cause foliar burn and chlorosis even though the injury may be short lived and new growth appears normal.…”
