Effect of Heat Treatment on Creep Deformation and Fracture Properties for a Coarse-Grained Inconel 718 Manufactured by Directed Energy Deposition

Abstract: The creep properties of a laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED) technique manufactured Inconel 718 (IN718) was investigated at 650 °C/700 MPa. Microstructure and creep properties of L-DED IN718 samples were tailored by various post heat treatments involving homogenization heat treatment with temperature ranging from 1080 to 1180 °C + double aging and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Microstructural changes and their influence on the creep behavior and fracture mechanism were observed and discussed. The results… Show more

“…AM can achieve increasingly complex designs by optimizing geometrical structures such as the topology or lattice structures [ [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] ] [ [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] ] [ [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] ]. However, optimizing features is not sufficient to satisfy all specified conditions, such as ultimate strength, corrosion resistance, and electrical conductivity [ [6] , [7] , [8] ] [ [6] , [7] , [8] ] [ [6] , [7] , [8] ]. Metal AM is usually performed using a single metallic material with a near-uniform chemical composition.…”

“…IN 718 manufactured by directed energy deposition has shown the best performance of creep phenomenon after DA treatment. Its creep lifetime is 200/h, the highest value compared to other heat treatments (HT), such as HT homogenization and hot isotactic pressing and DA [ 34 ]. However, some studies explained that, without solution treatment as the first treatment in precipitation hardening of IN 718, this made the formed γ phase unstable [ 32 ].…”
