Effect of guar gum on blood lipids

Abstract: The effect of guar gum in capsule form on serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipoprotein cholesterol (very low-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins, and high-density lipoproteins) was studied in healthy volunteers in this double-blind study. Twenty-four subjects equally divided into treatment and placebo groups, received 9.0 g/day of guar and glucose in 600 mg identical capsules, respectively, for 4 wk under conditions of constant body weight and dietary stability. Guar significantly lowered… Show more

“…The differences between our findings and those reported by other authors [10, 27,31] may depend both on the selection of patients and on the prescribed dietary treatment. Pa tients selected by us were mostly affected with primary hypertriglyceridemia (with and without hypercholesterolemia); a few had either nephrotic hyperlipidemia or an altered carbohydrate metabolism of the diabetic type.…”

“…However, daily consumption of 15 g guar gum considerably reduces serum total cholesterol (Salenius et al, 1995). In another study, 16.6% reduction in total cholesterol was observed by using guar gum in capsule form (Khan, Khan, Mitchel, & Qadeer, 1981). Approximately 40% cholesterol concentration can lowered with daily consumption of 8-36 g guar gum (Gee, Blackburn, & Johnson, 1983;Glore, Treeck, Knehans, & Guild, 1994).…”

“…Intake of 15 g guar gum in the daily diet considerably reduces serum concentration of total and LDL cholesterol without attenuation over 2 years of treatment (Salenius et al, 1995). The effect of guar gum in capsule form significantly lowered 25.6% LDL cholesterol (Khan et al, 1981). In another study, 44% reduction in LDL cholesterol was observed in guinea pigs by feeding soluble fiber diet containing 2.5 g/100g of guar gum, 5 g/100 g of psyllium and 5 g/100 g of pectin diet (Roy et al, 2000).…”

“…It was also observed by Sierra et al [31] that consumption of 14 g/d of psyllium in twenty type 2 diabetic patients for 6 weeks resulted in reduction of total and LDL-cholesterol by 7 percent and 9 percent, respectively. Khan et al [32] observed a large reduction (25 percent) in LDL-cholesterol in 24 healthy volunteers receiving 9 g of guar gum per day for 4 weeks. In addition, cocoa powder and dark chocolate also affect cardiovascular disease risk status by modestly reducing LDL oxidation susceptibility, increasing serum total antioxidant capacity and HDL-cholesterol concentrations due to the presence of the flavonoids which have ability to bind with the lipoproteins [33].…”
