Most old roses are difficult to root when propagated by cuttings. This research focused on the response of stem cuttings of Rosa “Hurdal” to plant origin preparations used as rhizogenesis enhancers through changes to the anatomical structure of the basal part of the stem. Cuttings derived from shoots in four phenological stages were prepared for the experiment: flower buds closed (H1); fully flowering (H2); immediately after petals have fallen (H3); 7–14 days after petals have fallen (H4). The cuttings were treated with 0.4% indole butyric acid (IBA; Ukorzeniacz Aaqua) or 0.2% naphthalene acetic acid (NAA; Ukorzeniacz Baqua), and with plant origin preparations: Algae extract (Bio Rhizotonic), Organic preparation (Root JuiceTM), and Plant extract (Bio Roots). A high rooting percentage in comparison to the control (27.5%) was obtained after treatments of the H1 cuttings with Algae extract (90%), Organic preparation (80%), and Plant extract (75%). The H4 cuttings did not root, probably as a result of an overgrowing callus and limited xylem formation. The anatomical structure of the shoot differed in subsequent phenological stages during the period of rooting in various ways, depending on the rooting enhancer used for treatment. Numerous correlations between rooting percentage and anatomical structure were proved, including the key role of vascular bundles in increasing rooting percentage by widening the vessel diameter.

The utilization of cuttings remains a prevalent method for vegetative propagation in various plant species. Synthetic rooting hormones have conventionally been employed to enhance the rooting process; however, their high cost and potential environmental risks have necessitated the exploration of natural alternative compounds. In this study, the efficacy of natural plant extracts (pure honey, aloe extract, willow extract, moringa extract, and cinnamon powder) and synthetic auxin derivatives (indole-3-butyric acid and α-naphthaleneacetic acid) at a concentration of 2000 ppm was compared for their influence on rooting and vegetative growth of snowbush (Breynia disticha) cuttings, a significant ornamental and medicinal shrub. Results demonstrated that while the synthetic hormones produced the highest survival percentages and root number, the roots were consistently short, thick, friable, and largely void of secondary roots. Conversely, the alternative natural plant extracts, particularly aloe extract, exhibited promising outcomes, showcasing good rooting percentage and root number, significantly increased root length, and fresh and dry root weight. Furthermore, aloe extract demonstrated the potential to enhance shoot length and alter the chemical constituents of the cuttings. The highest values of total phenols and nitrogen percentage were recorded with cuttings treated with indole-3-butyric acid, followed by cuttings treated with aloe extract. While using aloe extract, we recorded the highest values of total carbohydrates, phosphorus, and potassium percentages. Notably, the highest endogenous levels of indole acetic acid and gibberellic acid, along with the lowest abscisic acid concentration in cutting tissues, were associated with the highest rooting percentage observed with indole-3-butyric acid, followed by the use of aloe extract. We hypothesized that natural plant extracts, specifically aloe extract, have potential as a viable alternative for synthetic auxins in promoting successful rooting and vegetative growth in snowbush cuttings. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and optimize the application of these natural compounds in vegetative propagation techniques.

The objective of the current study to evaluate rooting media, growth biostimulants and their interactions on rooting, vegetative growth and chemical constituents of rose cuttings. This investigation was laid out in a factorial experiment, the main factor (rooting media) consists of three treatments sand, palm peat and sand + palm peat (1:1 v:v), while the secondary factor consists of seven treatments control (tap water), Aloe vera gel extract (AVE) at 2 and 4%, moringa leaf extract (MLE) at 2 and 4% and seaweed extract (SWE) at 2 and 4%, as soaking-cuttings treatments. The obtained data showed that rooting media of sand + palm peat (1:1 v:v) caused a significant increase in all traits of rose, which includes rooting percentage, root length, root number, root fresh weight and root dry weight, plant height, branch number, stem diameter, leaf number, shoot fresh weight and shoot dry weight, total chlorophyll content and total carbohydrates %. As for soaking-cuttings treatments with growth biostimulants found that most concentrations significantly increased these traits under study, as compared to control. Clearly, the highest values were obtained by soaking rose cuttings in moringa leaf extract (MLE) at 4% over control. Regarding to the combined between two examined factors, the best results in rooting and growth rose cuttings were obtained using the mixture of rooting media sand + palm peat (1:1 v:v) with moringa leaf extract at 4% or moringa leaf extract at 2%, in most cases, during the two experimental seasons.
