Effect of Gonadotrophins on the Oestrous Cycle in the Guinea-Pig

Abstract: Adult virgin, regularly cyclic female guinea-pigs were treated with different doses of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone during the late luteal phase of the oestrous cycle. The onset of the next oestrus was delayed and the length of the dioestrous stage was prolonged beyond the normal range in all the treated groups, but for a maximum period in the animals receiving LH alone. The results indicate a dual role of LH on the normal cycle of the guineapig. It has been suggested that either lu… Show more

“…The incidence of entrapped ova in luteinizing follicles was greatest in the group receiving the combined PMSG-HCG treatment and may represent an excessive stimulation of the follicular apparatus. This is apparently a common response of the guinea pig ovary to exogenous gonadotropin (Hamburger and Pedersen-Bjergaard, 1946;Perry and Rowlands, 1963;Deane sly, 1966;Das and Benson, 1970;Donovan and Lockhart, 1972), and suggests that further decreases in the total gonado tropin dosage may be warranted.…”

“…Das & Benson (1970) gave FSH, LH or combinations of the two hormones daily to guineapigs between days 12 and 15. With 200/ig NIH-LH-Sl 1 daily the treatment cycles were extended by 5-7f days, and with 400 µg of the hormone by 5J-9 days.…”

“…Exogenous LH appears to be luteotrophic in normal cyclic guinea-pigs (Das & Benson, 1970), and Nalbandov (1961) suggested a luteotrophic role of LH in this species. Unfortunately, on the basis of tinctorial differentiation we found it difficult to distinguish with certainty between gonadotrophs and thyrotrophs, and therefore to identify FSH-and LH-secreting cells.…”
