The presence of quartz particle size (> 45 µm) has a deleterious effect on physio-mechanical properties of porcelain tiles. The effect is due to various factors including microstructure (pore) after sintering. This study aims at investigating the effect of quartz particle size (QPS) on sintering behavior and flexural strength of porcelain tiles made from raw materials in Uganda. Samples containing fine, medium and coarse QPS were pressed at 40 MPa, fired from 1150-1350°C at a firing rate of 60°C/min, and soaked for 1 hour. The influence of QPS on linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural strength was determined. Microstructure analysis of the fired samples was carried out using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and phase identification was studies using x-ray diffraction. The SEM showed large-interconnected pores for coarse QPS, and smaller-isolated pores for fine QPS. At optimum sintering temperature, samples with fine, medium and coarse QPS had values of 0.47, 0.9 and 7.1% water absorption respectively. Pressed tiles with ≤5% water absorption are classified as group BI a (porcelain tiles) and those > 0.5-≤3% as group BI b suitable as floor or wall tiles (ISO 13006). Also, the average flexural strength of 33, 18 and 8 MPa was exhibited by samples with fine, medium and coarse QPS respectively. The results indicate that only samples with fine and medium QPS satisfy the requirement ≥ 35±2 MPa and > 12 MPa for floor and wall tiles respectively (ISO 13006).

This study investigated the applicability of siliceous waste concrete powder (WCP‐S) as a reinforcing particle in plastic composite materials for effectively utilizing waste concrete. WCP‐S was obtained by milling waste concrete. Two types of resin materials, polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), were used as the matrix of the composite material. Composite materials were fabricated via compression molding, and the effect of the WCP‐S content on the mechanical properties of the composite materials was investigated. The flexural strength of the PP‐based material decreased with increasing WCP‐S content, whereas the flexural modulus increased. This result suggests insufficient interfacial adhesion between the matrix resin and WCP‐S in the plastic region with high flexural load. To improve this interfacial adhesion, we investigated the mechanical properties of the PE‐based composite material. The flexural strength remained almost constant on increasing the WCP‐S content in the PE‐based composite material, whereas the flexural strength increased. Therefore, WCP‐S is a promising reinforcement particle with an improved flexural modulus for PP or PE resins.Highlights Plastic composite material was fabricated using WCP‐S. The flexural strength of PP‐based composite material decreased. The flexural strength of PE‐based composite material remained almost constant. Flexural modulus increased the PP‐ and PE‐based composite material. WCP‐S is a promising reinforcement particle for PP/PE resins.

Around 21.7 million tons of urban solid waste are produced in North Africa and the Middle East. The amount of glass waste produced is 0.87 million tons. The amount of urban glass waste (UGW) produced in Egypt was 2280.8 tons per day. This paper aims to study the effect of partial replacement of UGW in the production of ceramic floor tiles to save the production cost and raw materials. The characteristics of the basic raw mixture of floor tiles and UGW were studied. The waste was collected, crushed and ground to be blended with the basic mixture in different percentages that ranged from 0 to 35%. The specimens were molded under uniaxial pressure followed by drying and firing at temperatures ranging from 1050 to 1120 °C. The characteristics of the fired specimens have been determined and compared with the International Standard Limits. The results showed that specimens containing waste ranging from 25% to 35%, fired at 1100 °C with a soaking time of 15 min have a modulus of rupture of 18.9 to 19.7 MPa, breaking strength of 600 to 613N and water absorption of 9.78% to 8.2% respectively that fulfilled the lowest requirements for the ISO 13006 for dry pressed tiles Group BIIb.
