Purpose: Reaction time is a good indicator of coordination between sensory motion and individual performance. It is the time interval from perceiving sudden stimulus until the reaction to that stimulus. One of the factors affecting reaction time is fatigue. Considering the different characteristics of fatigue in men and women, this study aimed to compare the effect of fatigue on the choice reaction time between men and women. Methods:The present study has quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest. A total of 16 healthy men and 16 healthy women within the age range of 18 to 35 years participated in this study. For measuring the reaction time and fatigue, 4-choice reaction time test and Borg Scale were used, respectively. To induce muscle fatigue, the stretch-shortening cycle protocol, which involves consecutive jumps in repetitive short and ascending cycles were used. When the participants' attempts score to perform the protocol reached 15 or more, execution of the protocol was terminated and the test of the choice reaction time was administered using visual stimulus. Reaction time was recorded in both modes before and after the fatigue. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), and inferential statistics (correlated t test and covariance analysis) were used to analyze the obtained data. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 19.Results: There was no significant difference between the choice reaction time of men and women before and after fatigue (P>0.05). Although, after fatigue, the mean score of the participants' reaction time increased in both men and women groups, this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion:Fatigue had no significant impact on the choice reaction time of non-athlete healthy men and women. And despite different fatigue characteristics in men and women, no difference was observed in the choice reaction time between two groups. It seems that the exhaustion perceived by the participants was the result of peripheral fatigue, not central fatigue.

Реформирование высшего образования в условиях глубоких социально-экономических преобразований обуславливает как оптимизацию профессиональной подготовки, так и развитие функциональных возможностей организма для будущей трудовой деятеьности. Особое значение в силу встраивания в сложную систему новой образовательной среды имеет начальный этап обучения. Целью работы явилось изучение особенностей адаптационного процесса у студентов-медиков первого курса. Функциональное состояние организма студентов изучено по зрительно-моторной реакции, функции внимания, скорости переработки информации, темппинг-тесту. Обследовано 179 студентов-медиков первого курса. Все студенты не имели патологии со стороны органов зрения, слуха, сердечно-сосудистой системы. В эксперименте также не участвовали лица с вредными привычками. От студентов было получено информационное согласие на участие в обследованиях. Проанализирована успеваемость. В основе адаптации студентов к обучению находится функциональная система организма. Установлена выраженная корреляционная связь между успеваемостью и скоростью мыслительных процессов (r=0,63, р<0,01), функцией внимания (r=0,47, р<0,05), коэффициентом мотометрии (r=0,45, р<0,05), объёмом зрительной памяти (r=0,43, р<0,05). Характер распределения указанных показателей свидетельствует о целесообразности использования сигмального отклонения для оценки степени адаптации.Abstract. Background: Medical students experience stress at every phase of curriculum more so before examination. This stress may affect physiological, psychological and cognitive functions of the students. Aim:The present study aimed to evaluate stress status among first year MBBS students by recording pulse rate (PR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and using stress questionnaire; its effect on cognitive function by recording auditory reaction time (ART) and visual reaction time (VRT). Setting and Design:It is a cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods:A total of 100 (49 males and 51 females) first year healthy MBBS students participated. Stress questionnaire was given and assessed. Cardiovascular parameters were also assessed. The ART and VRT were recorded before (pre examination setting) and after 3 month of examination (post-examination setting).Statistical Analysis: The data were analysed by using SPSS 21.0 version.Results: All parameters namely PR, SBP, DBP, ART, VRT and stress scores were increased in preexamination setting irrespective of gender. Increased PR was observed in female learners where as stress score and SBP were increased in males in pre-examination setting. ART and VRT were more in females as compared to males in both setting.
