Effect of garlic extract, ascorbic acid and nicotinamide on growth, some biochemical aspects, yield and its components of three faba bean (Vicia faba L.) cultivars under sandy soil conditions

Abstract: Background: Garlic extract is a highly nutritive value extract; it contains large number of important enzymes and more than 200 biochemical compounds such as antioxidants and vitamins. Ascorbic acid and nicotinamide are considered as antioxidants and also known as growth-regulating compounds that influence different physiological and biochemical processes in plants. Methodology: A field experiment was conducted in sandy soil during two successive seasons of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 at Research and Production St… Show more

“…These results are in the same context by Safina (2017) who revealed that flax + faba bean could be formed unfavorable under-grown conditions for Orobanche crenata growth. Similar results were observed by Mohamed et al (2020) who showed that foliar application of ascorbic acid caused significant increases in chlorophyll a compared with control faba bean plants.…”

“…The literature shows that the application of garlic-based extracts can increase the content of phenolics in faba beans [92]. The use of moringa-based extracts can also enhance the content of total phenolic content in coriander [58], anthocyanins in plum trees [80], and phenols in rocket [61].…”

“…As for garlic, previous studies showed that garlic is a source of antioxidants ( phenols and flavonoids) and contains various growth-promoting compounds such as organo-sulphur compounds (allicin and diallyl disulphide) that improve the growth and yield of faba bean plants. 47,48 Phenolics and flavonoids are two of the major bioactive substances present in citrus fruits such as lemon, with a higher concentration in the peels than in the fruits. 49 Citrus phenolics and flavonoids are powerful antioxidants and potent free radical scavengers that help in the prevention of diseases that occur due to ROS.…”
