Effect of foliar application of selenium on the content of selected amino acids in potato tubers (Solanum tuberosum L.)

Abstract: Selenium (Se) is an important element associated with the enhancement of antioxidant activity in organisms. Potato is very suitable for fertilisation with Se (biofortification). The experiment was performed to examine the effect of foliar application of Se as sodium selenite (200 or 400 g Se/ha) at the tuberisation stage on a spectrum of amino acids in tubers of varieties. The trends of amino acids were consistent in both years of the study. Application of Se increased the relative content of total essential (… Show more

“…An increase in salicylic acid, a major phenylpropanoid involved in plant acclimatization to various stressors, has been observed in selenium-treated Arabidopsis (Tamaoki et al, 2008). Rises in phenylalanine contents have been reported in Se-fertilized plants (Munshi et al, 1990;Ježek et al, 2011). The production of phenylpropanoids, mainly derived from phenylalanine and tyrosine, is triggered as one of the defense mechanisms under a variety of biotic and abiotic stressors (Dixon and Paiva, 1995).…”

“…Amino acids (AA) are the precursors to proteins and also their constituents and they play an important role in metabolism and development (Ježek et al 2011). Plants that were exposed to toxic metals have also been shown to accumulate specific AA, which may have beneficial functions.…”
