Effect of flow and vascular heterogeneity on glucose metabolism in isolated dog hearts

Abstract: In non-ischaemic myocardium glucose uptake is assumed to be proportional to blood flow. We investigated the effect of regional vascular heterogeneity on glucose metabolism at various flow rates in the isolated blood-perfused dog hearts. Aortic bolus injections contained an intravascular reference tracer (albumin) and two of three glucoses: L-glucose (an extracellular tracer), D-glucose and 2-deoxy-D-glucose. Flow ranged from 0.5 to 2 4 ml min(-1) g(-1). Vascular heterogeneity was calculated from the albumin ou… Show more

“…Heterogeneity of flow is present in ischemia in the patient (344). Oxygen consumption, glucose uptake, glycolytic enzyme activity, and oxygen delivery are related and also heterogeneously distributed (6,158,179,252,372). In addition to flow heterogeneity, flow regulation (193), metabolic control of flow (98), vasomotion (400), microvascular coronary ␣-adrenergic vasoconstriction (77), and responses to drugs (78,236,265) are all heterogeneously distributed.…”

“…2 ) has to be taken also into account, for example, due to a possible flow dependency (13). Furthermore, the results obtained by Cousineau et al (3) in dog heart suggest that ␤-adrenergic blockade may change organ transit time dispersion, besides its effect on Q distribution (17).…”
