Statement of the Problem. The colonization of micro-organisms on acrylic resin dentures may result in denture-induced stomatitis. No efficient coating has yet been proposed to address this issue. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the effect of various initial surface finishes and different Parylene (P) coating thicknesses on the surface roughness (Ra) and surface free energy (SFE) of Parylene coated polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Material and Methods. One hundred and sixty PMMA specimens were produced and divided into 8 groups as follows: Group A: uncoated-1000grit finish; group Ap1: 10 μm P coated -1000grit finish; group B: uncoated -1200grit finish; group Bp: 10 μm P coated -1200grit finish; group C: uncoated2400grit finish; group Cp: 10 μm P coated -2400grit finish; group Ap2: 20 μm P coated -1000grit finish; group Ap3: 30 μm P coated -1000grit finish. The Ra of all specimens was measured with a noncontact profilometer. To calculate the SFE, the Owens-Wendt approach was applied after measuring the contact angles with a goniometer. The topography of the specimens was observed by scanning electron microscope. Atmospheric-pressure cold plasma was applied to process the surface of heat-polymerized acrylic resin. Changes to the physical properties and early adherence of Candida albicans were investigated. Alternating current cold plasma with Ar/O2 as working gas was used. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to study the possible mechanism. Experimental results showed that after plasma treatment, the contact angle of acrylic resin significantly decreased. There were no significant differences in roughness, flexural strength and elasticity modulus, but microhardness was significant improved in the treated group. More importantly, the early adherence of Candida albicans on the surface was reduced after plasma treatment. Cold plasma seemed to be a promising and convenient strategy of preventing the early adherence of Candida albicans on acrylic resins, which would greatly benefit potential dental applications.

Oral and labial lesions are usually the result of local disease but may be the early signs of systemic disease, including dermatological disorders, and in some instances may cause the main symptoms. This chapter mainly discusses disorders of the periodontal and mucosal tissues that may be related to skin disease and that may present at a dermatology clinic. It should be borne in mind that the professionals most competent in diagnosing and treating oral diseases are those with formal dental training and who are therefore in a position to understand the full complexities of the region. This chapter is divided into a brief discussion of the biology of the mouth, an overview of the more common signs and symptoms affecting specific oral tissues, discussion of the disorders of the oral mucosa of most relevance to dermatology and a tabulated review of oral manifestations of systemic diseases. Only the more classic oral lesions are illustrated. For reasons of space restrictions, diseases affecting the teeth, salivary glands, jaws or temporomandibular joints are not discussed in any depth.

Abstract: S and HP coatings reduced significantly the adhesion of C. albicans to the acrylic resin and could be considered as a potential preventive treatment for denture stomatitis.
