Background: The functional deterioration of salivary glands is a consequence of a wide range of factors and significantly interfered with life quality. Desloratadine (an antihistamine) is among the drugs listed to cause dry mouth; however, its effect on major salivary gland tissues has not been well studied. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of desloratadine treatment on parotid gland tissues, histological features, and their impact on serum oxidative and antioxidant markers. Materials and methods: Thirty rats were used in this study. They were divided into three groups (each containing ten rats). Group A: control rats. Group B and C have received desloratadine at dose 0.142 and 0.245 mg/kg of body weight respectively for three weeks. After three weeks, serum levels of sialic acid, malondialdehyde, catalase, lactate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase, creatin kinase, and glutathione were estimated for three groups. Then, animals were sacrificed and five µm formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections were prepared routinely from parotid glands for histological evaluation under light microscope. Results: The histological evaluation of salivary gland tissues in both treated-groups was revealed a remarkable cytoplasmic vacuolization, atrophy, and degranulation in acinic cells. The serous acinar cells were showed autolysis and nuclear changes (pyknosis, karyorrhexis, and karyolysis). There was an increase in the interstitial spaces between each parenchymal element associated with few mononuclear cell infiltrations. The intra-lobular ducts were reduced in size and were indistinct throughout lobes. The severe changes were associated with higher desloratadine dose. Regarding biochemical analysis, the treated-groups had significantly increased serum levels of malondialdehyde, sialic acid, lactate dehydrogenase and creatin kinase, and significantly reduced serum levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione. Conclusion: Desloratadine administration produces noticeable histological changes in a dosedependent manner associated with increased oxidative stress markers and decreased antioxidative activity.

Background: Outbreak pneumonia announced in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, had its causative factor classified as a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Since saliva can host several viruses including SARS-CoV-2, the transmission chance of viruses through saliva, particularly those causing respiratory infections, is unavoidable. COVID-19 can be detected through salivary diagnostic testing which has lots of advantages for medical care professionals and patients. However, the utility of saliva in diagnosing COVID-19 infection remains understudied. Aim of the study: In this review, we attempt to provide a comprehensive and updated source of information about salivary markers of liver enzyme, cytokines and oxidative stress in associated with the infections caused by COVID-19 and the various effects it has had on the dental profession and patients visits to dental clinics. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science, and Google Scholar from December 1, 2020, till April 15, 2021. Results: Nine studies were included in this study. Pooled results showed a significant increase in salivary liver enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT among patients with Covid‐19. Three studies showed a significant elevations in salivary TNF-α, CRP, IL‐6 and,IL-10 levels among patients with Covid‐19. Four studies that reported a significant in elevation salivary level of MDA, whereas reduction salivary levels of SOD, catalase, GPX. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis shows that deranged of salivary liver enzymes , hyper-inflammation, may indicate severe COVID-19 and could also predict mortality. Larger studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between derangement in salivary biochemical and mortality in COVID-19.

Background: Arthritis is a term often used to mean any disorder that affects joints. Symptoms generally include joint pain and stiffness. Other symptoms may include redness, warmth, swelling, and decreased range of motion of the affected joints. In some types of arthritis, other organs are also affected. Aim: This study aimed to identify the impact of vitamin D therapy on serum level of vitamin D-binding protein and procalcitonin in Patients with arthritis. Methods: This cross-sectional study, was conducted in Kirkuk city between January 1 st and March 1 st , 2024. A total of 180 subjects were included, categorized into three groups: arthritis patients not receiving vitamin D (Group 1), arthritis patients receiving vitamin D for at least 2 months (Group 2), and a control group comprising 40 healthy subjects. Blood samples were collected from participants, processed, and stored for subsequent analysis. Various biomarkers, including vitamin D-binding protein and procalcitonin, were determined using ELISA kits. Results: The study revealed a higher prevalence of females among arthritis patients (54.29%), with most affected individuals aged above 60 years. Urban residency was predominant among arthritis patients (75.71%). The majority of RA patients had been affected for 6-10 years (40%). Comparative analysis demonstrated significantly higher procalcitonin levels in RA patients without vitamin D supplementation (112.4±24.3 ng/ ml) compared to those with supplementation (48.33±10.73 ng/ml) and healthy controls (9.68±5.49 ng/ ml). Furthermore, vitamin D binding protein levels were significantly lower in arthritis patients without supplementation (1.26±0.12 ng/ml) compared to those with supplementation (0.75±0.15 ng/ml) and healthy controls (0.23±0.14 ng/ml). Conclusion: These findings underscore the potential role of vitamin D supplementation in modulating inflammatory markers and enhancing vitamin D binding protein levels in arthritis patients, suggesting its therapeutic implications in disease management.
