Mental illness refers to all diagnosable mental disorders which are characterised by abnormalities in thinking, feelings or behaviours. Ethnobotanical study surveyed the different types of medicinal plants used for the treatment of mental illness in Bassa, Pankshin, and Kanke Local Government Areas of Plateau State, Nigeria. Information was obtained from traditional medicine practitioners, herbalist and herb sellers, with the aid of semi structured questionnaire. Plant samples were collected and identified by taxonomists in the herbarium section of Federal College of Forestry Jos and Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria. The information was obtained from a total of 35 respondents. Forty two plants were identified from the study, from 31 families. The source, uses, plant parts, and methods of preparation were some of the information derived. The family with the highest number of represented species was Lamiaceae accounting for 10% with a user value of 0.035. The dominant route of administration employed for drug delivery was oral accounting for up to 80% (56% as strictly oral). The plant parts mostly collected by the respondents for management of the conditions reported are leaves amounting to 51%. Some of the plants have recorded scientific values for neuropharmacological activities, whereas others are yet to be tested. It is important to validate these plants scientifically for possible neuropharmacological properties that may be harnessed for future use.

The present investigation was aimed to study an anticonvulsant activity of ethanolic extract of Desmodium triflorum (L.) DC., Fabaceae, in mice. Animal models of epilepsy namely the pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), isoniazid or isonicotinic hydrazide (INH) and maximal electroshock induced convulsion (MES) were used to evaluate the anticonvulsant effects of the extracts. The biochemical estimation was done by measuring the lipid peroxidation and reduced glutathione (GSH). In the PTZ induced convulsion, ethanolic extract of D. triflorum (EEDT) 400 mg/kg significant delayed the onset of convulsion, reduced the duration of convulsion and reduced mortality. Similarly a dose of 800 mg/kg of EDDT significantly delayed the onset of convulsion, reduced the duration of convulsion and showed 33.33% protection in mice against INH induced convulsion. Further no mortality was found. Both the doses reduced hind limb tonic extension (HLTE) phase of MES induced convulsion in mice. The pretreated EEDT showed significant inhibition of lipid peroxidation and increases the reduced glutathione level in mice brain tissue. The results revealed that D. triflorum possesses a significant dose dependent anticonvulsant activity.

Objective: The aim and objective of the present study are to study the protective effects of ethanolic extract of Indica tinctoria (EEIT) in isoproterenolinduced acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in rats. Methods:The effect of two doses of isoproterenol (5 mg/kg and 8.5 mg/kg body weight) changes in aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), and total protein (TP) and lipid hydroperoxides, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH) in blood serum and heart homogenate, for the two consecutive days (29 and 30), were administered subcutaneously in rats in pre-treatment with EEIT for the 28-day study.Results: There was increased the AST, ALT, LDH, CPK, and lipid peroxides levels and decreased the TP, SOD, GSH with Isoproterenol-induced group. Pre-treatment for 28 days with Indigofera tinctoria significantly (p<0.05) increased antioxidants (SOD , GSH) , TP levels and decreased the cardiotoxic agents significantly (p<0.05) such as LPO, AST, ALT, LDH, and CPK levels in treatment groups. Conclusion:I. tinctoria contains beneficial bioactive photochemicals that have been protective effective against isoproterenol-induced AMI in rats.
