Effect of Ephedrae Herba methanol extract on high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidaemic mice

Abstract: Context: Ephedrae Herba (EH), the dried stems and leaves of Ephedra sinica Stapf., E. intermedia Schrenk et C. A. Mey., or E. equisetina Bge. (Ephedraceae [Ephedra]) is used to treat respiratory diseases. Recently, especially in the Republic of Korea, EH has also been used for weight reduction. Objective: We evaluated the effects and molecular targets of methanol EH extract (EHM) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemic ICR mice. Materials and methods: EHM was orally administered (100 mg/kg body weight/da… Show more

“…These results, as well as the elevated body weight and organ index, and the changes of the blood lipid levels, generally matched with the results reported for HFD-induced hyperlipidemic mice ( Park et al, 2006 ; Gallou-Kabani et al, 2007 ; Lee et al, 2015 ; Yang et al, 2016 ; Zhong et al, 2018 ; Lee et al, 2019 ), showing the model was successfully developed. All the data for Figs.…”

“…Metabolomics combined with network pharmacology clarified that Astragalus atropilosulus regulated arachidonic acid metabolism and ether lipid metabolism (Wang et al, 2019). Platycodon grandiflorum and Crataegus pinnatifida ethanol extracts, as well as Ephedra sinica methanol extracts may also improve lipid metabolism (Lee et al, 2017;Kim et al, 2019b;Lee et al, 2019). Remarkably, ephedrine, astragaloside IV, calycosin and icariin, which were detected and identified in present study, may be linked to lipids alterations.…”

“…Xin et al pipetted methanol containing 0.1% formic acid onto the tip surface for DI-MS (direct ionization-mass spectrometry)-based metabolomics analysis of three species of medicinal Ephedrae Herba [ 23 ]. Lee et al tested the aqueous and methanol extracts of EH, and found methanol extract shown to be effective and safe to hyperlipidaemic mice [ 24 ]; Lv et al extracted Ephedra sinica with methanol/water (80:20, v/v) for 30 min at room temperature for component analysis [ 25 ]. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia also presented a standard method for several alkaloids quantification as follows: Ephedra sinica were extracted by 1.44% aqueous phosphate solution, and alkaloids were quantified by HPLC method with a mixture solution of methanol, aqueous phosphate, and other adding reagents as the mobile phase.…”
