Electronic cigarettes that are currently popular are used as nicotine replacement therapy. There are several substances contained in electronic cigarette liquid that have carcinogenic effects. These substances can also increase free radicals which in turn can cause oxidative stress. Nicotine, propylene glycol, and glycerin can cause disturbances in male reproductive function. Infertility can occur due to lifestyle factors, one of which is smoking. Nicotine found in cigarettes can reduce sperm quality, including concentration, mobility, viability, and sperm morphology. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of electronic cigarettes on sperm quality. The research method uses a literature review system. The twelve studies that are in accordance with the topic of discussion are experimental studies on mice and rats, two studies on human, and one study on both human and rats. Five journals showed a significant decrease in sperm count and testosterone serum level, three other journals showed a significant decrease in sperm morphology and viability, six journals showed a decrease in sperm motility, seven journals showed a significant impairment of testis histological structure, four journals showed a decrease of steroidogenesis enzymes, and one journal showed a significant increase of DNA fragmentation due to the use of electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes had an effect on sperm quality.

Introduction: The aim of the research was to prove that red ginger extract (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) could inhibit the increase in SGOT and SGPT levels in Gentamicin-induced rats. Objective: Twenty-five male rats aged 8-12 weeks with 150-200 gram BW divided into five groups research with C- was given CMC-Na 1% and aqua pro-injection, C+ was given 1% CMC-Na and induction of Gentamicin 80 mg/kg BW, and groups T1, T2, and T3 given induction of Gentamicin 80 mg/kg BW and red ginger extract at individual doses each of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW. All treatments were carried out for 15 days. On the 16th day, all rats were euthanized and their blood was drawn intracardiacly, then SGOT and SGPT levels were examined. The results of the research used the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Games-Howell statistical analysis. Results: The results showed that the C+ group experienced the highest increase (p<0.05) while the C-group experienced the lowest increase (p<0.05) compared to the other treatment groups. The T1, T2, T3 groups were able to inhibit the increase in SGOT and SGPT levels. Conclusion: The effective dose to inhibit the increase in SGOT levels is 400 mg/kg BW and the effective dose to inhibit the increase in SGPT levels is 200 mg/kg BW.

Background and Objective: E-cigarettes (e-cig) produce smoke with high levels of free oxidants, which can be eliminated by endogenous antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) in the human body. The GPx catabolizes hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), while catalase counteracts free radicals by catalyzing H 2 O 2 into H 2 O and O 2 . However, oxidative stress is shown in the imbalance condition between free oxidants and endogenous antioxidants. The effect of e-cigarette smoking on the human body has not been discovered. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the levels of GPx and CAT in the rat blood exposed to e-cig. Materials and Methods: The exposure to smoke with nicotine 3, 6 and 9 mg was applied to 30 rats divided into five groups for 30 days. The analysis results by one-way ANOVA showed significant differences in the GPx and CAT levels between the control and treatment groups. Nicotine at 9 mg gave the GPx level at 40.25±2.03 U mgG 1 and CAT at 2.46±0.50 nmol mLG 1 . Results: The results indicated that e-cigarette smoke reduced the levels of endogenous antioxidants in rat blood. Moreover, the body weight of rats increased and decreased due to the unstable metabolic rate. Conclusion: Exposure to e-cigarette smoke has an effect on reducing glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) levels in rat blood.
