Effect of Dynamic Properties of Support O-Rings on Stability of Herringbone-Grooved Aerodynamic Journal Bearings

Abstract: This paper discusses the stability of herringbone-grooved aerodynamic journal bearings supported by rubber O-rings. In this research, the dynamic stiffness and the damping properties of the O-rings are identified in a variety of operating and design conditions. The identification results are fitted with the empirical formulae previously proposed, and the distributions of the dynamic properties in a variety of support conditions are obtained. It is theoretically investigated how the stability of the bearing sys… Show more

“…These publications commonly RESEARCH note that the ability of dimples to provide the LCC has a strong influence on the lubrication characteristics. Since the pioneering works by Etsion et al [6], texturing has attracted attention for improving the lubrication performance of machine elements [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. Many researchers attempted to provide optimal designs for fully and partially textured bearings in analysis based on the Reynolds equation or the Navier-Stokes equation [15][16][17].…”

“…Applying dimples and/or grooves to the lubricating area is an effective method for improving lubrication performance [1]. Consequently, this technology is being used in various mechanical elements such as bearings [2][3][4][5], seals [6][7][8], and piston rings [9,10].…”

“…Surface texturing is a technology for improving tribological characteristics by creating patterns such as dimples [1] and grooves [2] on lubricating surfaces. Experimental and theoretical studies for making clear the effective geometric parameters of textured surfaces have been conducted from various viewpoints [3][4][5].…”
