“…Studies have suggested that AA regulates neurotransmitter activity, attenuates hormonal cortisol levels, prevents stress-induced oxidative injury, where it acts as an antioxidant within in the brain, serving a critical physiological role for balancing the interplay of anxiety-related programs across brain structures (Hughes, Lowther, & van Nobelen, 2011). In addition, Kori, Aladakatti, Desai, and Das (2016) showed that rats submitted to restrained stress (i.e., placed in a wire mesh restrainer for 6 hr per day for 21 days) had decreased levels of serum AA and α-tocopherol along with a significant increase in serum cortisol level. Moreover, while plasma AA levels decreased in rats exposed to chronic mild stress, AA supplemental or adjunctive therapy has been shown to prevent anxiety-like symptoms on neonatal handling of rats exposed to chronic mild stress (Boufleur et al, 2013).…”

“…Kori et al [ 182 ] observed that rats subjected to restrained stress (by placing in a wire mesh restrainer for 6 h per day for 21 days) displayed a significant increase in serum cortisol level with concomitant decrease in serum Vit C and E levels. Boufleur et al [ 183 ], in turn, found decreased plasma Vit C levels in rats exposed to chronic mild stress.…”

“…[ 17 18 ] On the other hand, the fall in bodyweight of ALZ and A + M treated rats might be as a result of increased energy expenditure due to hyperlocomotion and excessive loss of water through increased frequency of defecation and urination. [ 19 ] However, there were no significant differences in the food and water intake levels.…”
