Effect of dopants on thermal stability and self-diffusion in iron-nitride thin films

Abstract: We studied the effect of dopants (Al, Ti, Zr) on the thermal stability of iron-nitride thin films prepared using a dc magnetron sputtering technique. Structure and magnetic characterization of deposited samples reveal that the thermal stability together with soft magnetic properties of iron-nitride thin films get significantly improved with doping. To understand the observed results, detailed Fe and N self-diffusion measurements were performed. It was observed that N self-diffusion gets suppressed with Al dopi… Show more

“…In general, exact calculation of RSF is a tedious process due to involved matrix effects, but in the simplest case of two elements RSF can be calculated by using a reference sample with known concentration. [23,52] Using equation 1 we measured N at.% both for HiPIMS and dc-MS samples. Figure 7 shows the observed variation of nitrogen concentration with increasing R N2 .…”

“…Therefore, periodic isotope multilayer are widely used to study atomic selfdiffusion using NR. 15,32,34,[50][51][52] Figure 3 After annealing the intensity of Bragg peak start to decay and such decay is more rapid for sample (N1) than for (N2). A decay of Bragg peak intensity is a measure of atomic diffusion across interfaces.…”

“…Though the T c of Co 4 N is quite high at 827 K, its poor thermal stability is a concern. It can be anticipated that by using suitable dopants, the thermal stability of Co 4 N can be improved following a similar approach achieved in Fe-X-N [32].…”
