Effect of Distance on the Power Density from Two Light Guides

Abstract: Purpose: This study determined the effect of distance on the power density from standard and Turbo light guides (DemetronKerr, Danbury, Connecticut).Materials and Methods: Power density was measured from 0 to 10 mrn away from the tip of standard 8-mm curved light guides and 13/8-mm Turbo curved light guides. To determine the effect of distance on power density, a polynomial regression line was fitted. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) statistic and the Wilcoxon rank sum (WR) tests were used to determine if there wa… Show more

“…Thus the irradiance received by the restoration can be very different than at the tip of the light 48 and some curing lights deliver only 25% or less of the irradiance measured at the tip at a distance of just 8 mm away from the tip. [49][50][51][52][53] Consequently, the dentist should know how clinically relevant distances will affect the irradiance delivered by their curing light to the restoration (Figure 35). This information is highly relevant at the gingival margin region that is at high-risk for recurrent caries .54 This region is the most difficult to reach with the curing light and is furthest away from the light source.…”

“…The distance between the light tip and the gingival floor of a typical Class II preparation is about 7 mm. 17,21,22 This distance could have a significant influence on the polymerization of the first resin composite increment. In such situations, increasing light-curing time has been recommended.…”

“…Já para as ponteiras com dimensões maiores esse paralelismo não ocorre. A extremidade a ponteira torna-se mais ampla e as paredes divergentes aumentam a efetividade da irradiação [15] . Contudo, Vandewalle, Roberts e Rueggeberg [24] encontraram que tais ponteiras são tão efetivas na distribuição da luz quanto às ponteiras padrão.…”
