Effect of dissolved oxygen on elemental sulfur generation in sulfide and nitrate removal process: characterization, pathway, and microbial community analysis

Abstract: Microaerobic bioreactor treatment for enriched sulfide and nitrate has been demonstrated as an effective strategy to improve the efficiencies of elemental sulfur (S(0)) generation, sulfide oxidation, and nitrate reduction. However, there is little detailed information for the effect and mechanism of dissolved oxygen (DO) on the variations of microbial community in sulfur generation, sulfide oxidation, and nitrate reduction systems. Polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) wa… Show more

“…The change in DO concentration can alter the bacterial community structure. When the DO concentration is from 0-0.7 mg/L, then variations of microbial community structures can be realized in a sulfi de oxidation and nitrate reduction reactor (Wang et al, 2016). The 2.5 mg/L DO concentration also ensures the optimal bacterial community in a moving bed sequencing batch reactor (Cao et al, 2017).…”

“…and green sulfur bacterium (Pokorna and Zabranska 2015 ). A problem of using these sulfur-oxidizing bacteria is the production of sulfuric acid, leading to acidification of the liquid phase; however, the problem can be prevented if oxygen supply is restricted (Dolejs et al 2015 ; Janssen et al 1998 ; Sorokin et al 2008 ; Wang et al 2016 ). When acidification occurs, alkaline materials are added to neutralize the acidified liquid, which increases the cost (Gerrity et al 2016 ; Mora et al 2015 ; Pokorna and Zabranska 2015 ).…”
