Effect of dissolved oxygen on nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes from lake sediments and their thresholds based on incubation using a simple and stable dissolved oxygen control method

Abstract: Laboratory incubation of intact sediments is a popular and useful method for obtaining nutrient fluxes from lake sediments to the overlying water. However, one of the main problems facing this method is that the lake sediment core itself consumes oxygen from the overlying water due to the decomposition of organic matter. In this study, addition of headspace with controlled oxygen concentration and circulation of overlying water to the traditional intact sediment incubation method allows for incubation with a s… Show more

“…The effect of dissolved oxygen deficiency on the supply of nitrogen and phosphorus inorganic forms from bottom sediments has been reported in numerous publications (Denisova et al, 1987;Osaka et al, 2022;Penn et al 2000). The influence of the oxygen regime on the nitrogen and phosphorus inorganic forms content was shown for Opechen' system's lakes (Fig.…”

“…In monsoon Asia, the frequency and intensity of precipitation increases during the summer rainy season when lakes experience thermal stratification. The stratification makes the lake bottom reductive, which in turn enhances the regeneration of bioavailable phosphorous from the sedimentary PP (Osaka et al, 2022). Therefore, the riverine PP can be biologically recycled more than would be expected in the lake ecosystem.…”

“…The percent of the total number of DO readings that was hypoxic or anoxic was also calculated for each site across the full study period (1968–2019). A threshold of 2 mg/L was chosen as an intermediate estimate of hypoxic conditions and corresponds with recent work that found SRP fluxes from lake sediments rapidly increased when DO concentrations were <1.5 mg/L (Osaka et al, 2022).…”
