Effect of diffuser vane height and position on the performance of a centrifugal compressor

Abstract: The present paper reports experimental investigations on the effect of diffuser vane height and position on the performance of a low-speed centrifugal compressor. The diffuser vane height is systematically varied from 0.2 to 0.9 times the diffuser width. In addition, the effect of vane position is examined by fixing the partial vanes to the hub, shroud, or hub and shroud. The compressor performance is determined with these vanes in the vane and low solidity vane diffuser configurations. It is found that there … Show more

“…During the past years, some investigations have been carried out to study the half vane diffuser in centrifugal compressors. The results showed that this diffuser could improve the stage performance 8–10 . Yoshinaga et al 8 proposed a diffuser with half vanes in a centrifugal compressor and the test result showed that the pressure recovery of this diffuser at distorted inlet flow is considerably improved.…”

“…A numerical simulation of the compressor with eight kinds of non-dimensional hub vane height h/b was conducted to study the influence of the diffuser hub vane height on the flow characteristics. Issac et al 9 experimentally studied the effect of diffuser vane height that varied from 0.2 to 0.9 times the diffuser width and vane position by fixing the partial vanes to the hub, shroud, or hub and shroud on the performance of a low-speed centrifugal compressor. It was found that there was an optimum height of 0.3 times the diffuser width for the diffuser vane height.…”

“…In their approach, the dynamics of the compression system were modified by feeding back perturbations into the flow field. Issac et al [6] experimentally investigated the effect of diffuser vane position and height on the low-speed compressor pressure coefficient. Several numerical and experimental studies have been performed for overhung volutes with an elliptical, rectangular, or circular cross-section [6].…”

Several numerical and experimental studies have been performed for overhung volutes with an elliptical, rectangular, or circular cross-section [6]. Ayder et al [7] performed numerical and experimental studies based on an elliptical overhung volute using a multi-hole probe to measure flow parameters at several angular locations along the circumferential of the volute scroll.…”
