Effect of different litter materials on foot pad dermatitis, hock burn and feather coverage in broiler chickens

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the feather coverage on breast and thighs in meat type chickens, reared on three different types of litter materials, including wood shavings, shredded paper and chopped wheat straw. The experiment lasted for 72 days. A total of 447 one-day-old meat type chickens were randomly allotted to the three litter materials, giving 149 birds per litter. On days 24, 47 and 72 of the experimental period, feathering on the breast and thighs was scored according to a 1–4 scale. In ad… Show more

“…As suggested by Mayne et al (2007), straw may perform worse than materials like wood shavings due to its higher moisture content. This effect was also demonstrated by Terčič et al (2015), who found that straw litter had the highest moisture content (22%) compared with wood shavings (8%) and shredded paper (9%). It should be noted that the litter materials will vary between the regions depending on cost and availability.…”

“…We found that the flocks housed in barns that were bedded with straw had a higher prevalence of FPD compared with those that did not use a straw. In the literature, straw bedding is associated with more severe FPD than wood shavings Mayne et al, 2007;Terčič et al, 2015). As suggested by Mayne et al (2007), straw may perform worse than materials like wood shavings due to its higher moisture content.…”

“…However, the current groups did not differ (P >0.05) in the mean occurrence of HB (Figure 2), which could be because hock lesions develop more slowly and are less common than footpad lesions (EC, 2000). Other studies found no effect of litter type and quality (Haslam et al, 2006;Terčič et al, 2015) or stocking density (Haslam et al, 2007) on the occurrence of HB in broilers.…”

“…Some studies using same methodology for fungal identification detected more mould genera, including Aspergillus sections, than we did ( 9 , 37 , 38 ), most likely because of different litter material. This suggests that straw litter, known to have higher moisture, pH, and temperature than other materials ( 44 , 52 , 53 , 54 ), favours the development of more homogeneous mycoflora.…”
