Effect of Depressive Symptoms on Survival After Heart Transplantation

Abstract: Patient self-reported depression, but not anxiety, can contribute to the identification of subgroups of patients with an unfavorable outcome after HTx. It therefore may be helpful to screen for depression, particularly in patients with an ischemic cause of their end-stage heart disease. Specific intervention programs should be further developed and evaluated.

“…Advanced recipient age, advanced donor age and female-to-male mismatch have been identified as important risk factors in several reports, 4 -8 and do predict post-HTx mortality above and beyond depressive symptoms. 16 These risk factors and Type D were entered at the same time into a logistic regression model to determine whether Type D independently predicted unfavorable outcomes.…”

“…A recent meta‐analysis of heart, liver, kidney, lung, and other solid organ transplant patients found depression in general to be related to adverse posttransplant outcomes 18. However, this meta‐analysis included only 4 (smaller single‐center) studies of HTx patients with a pretransplant assessment of depression, which have reported conflicting findings 19, 20, 21, 22. Social isolation was not evaluated in these studies.…”
