Summary Introduction After the completion of treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances, it is necessary to remove the brackets and bands from teeth using an appropriate method. The aim of this study was to determine the most common way of bond failure between teeth and metal brackets, as well as to compare bond failure between the brackets and upper and lower premolars. Material and Method Metal brackets were bonded with Aspire composite material on 154 human premolars, extracted for orthodontic purposes. After debonding, the surface of remaining adhesive on the teeth and brackets was measured. Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was used to estimate bond failure between teeth and metal brackets. Results The average size of remaining adhesive surface after removing brackets from the upper premolars was 12.06 mm2, while it was 9.32 mm2 on the lower premolars. The average size of the remaining adhesive surface area on the brackets removed from the upper premolars was 0.37 mm2, while it was 2.08 mm2 on the brackets removed from lower premolars. A statistically significant difference was found between these values. The most common score of ARIteeth was 3 (85.71%) and the most frequent score of ARIbrackets was 0 (85.71%). Conclusion The most common way of bond failure between teeth and metal brackets was between the bracket base and adhesive surface. A statistically significant difference was found between the values of the size of residual adhesive surface on the upper and lower premolars as well as on the brackets debonded from them.

BackgroundThe purpose of this study is to determine if the duration of exposure to the halogen overhead dental chair light has an effect on shear bond strength (SBS) of metal orthodontic brackets.Material and MethodsOne hundred twenty extracted human lower incisor teeth were divided into six groups (n=20/group). Each group was assigned a predetermined duration of exposure to the halogen dental chair light, set at a fixed distance, before being cured. Light exposure times of 0 minutes (Group 1-Control), 1 minute (Group 2), 2.5 minutes (Group 3), 5 minutes (Group 4), 10 minutes (Group 5), and 15 minutes (Group 6) were tested. Each tooth was subjected to an exclusion criteria examination, scrubbed of all debris, and imbedded in a PVC-stone fixture with the crown of the tooth exposed above the stone surface. All groups had orthodontic brackets bonded with the same materials and process, then light cured for 6 seconds using the Valo LED curing unit after their designated light exposure time. Groups were tested using an Instron E-1000 universal testing machine with a shear load test set at a speed of 1mm/min using a knife-edged chisel. Data was analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test. The Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was scored under 10x magnification. The ARI data was analyzed using the Chi-square test (p-value < 0.05).ResultsAll control and experimental groups for each specific tooth type tested resulted in SBS within or above the clinically acceptable range. Statistically significant differences (p<.05) were found between the control and experimental groups for dental chair light exposure times of 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes. A chi-square test determined that there was statistical significance when evaluating the frequency of ARI scores when light exposure duration was greater than 5 minutes.ConclusionsIt can be concluded that dental chair light exposure in the 5 minute, 10 minute and 15 minute groups produced higher shear bond strength than those of the control, 1 minute and 2.5 minute groups. The dental chair light is capable of initiating polymerization and causing higher bond strengths than the clinical acceptability of 5.8-7.9 MPa, thus continued dental chair light exposure over 5 minutes is not recommended. The ARI analysis revealed that as bond strength increased, the fracture pattern shifted from most remaining adhesive attached to the tooth toward that attached to the bracket. Clinically acceptable values of shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded on enamel: An integrative review

Objective: The objective this review was to identify the current range of shear bond strength values (SBS) that are clinically acceptable based on a synthesis of the studies published in 20 years that evaluated the SBS of brackets bonded to dental enamel with emitter diode light photo activators and whether damage to the enamel has been reported after the test. Methodology: A search strategy was developed for the selection of articles published from 1999 to 2019 in the PubMed/MedLine electronic database. In addition to reading the titles, keywords and summaries of the studies found, the studies were also obtained for the reading of the methodologies and identification of the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The search for scientific articles resulted in 580 studies, but only 14 were selected based on the pre-established criteria. Ten presented methodological quality to be included in this integrative review, and the mean SBS found was 14,05 MPa with a standard deviation of ± 6,52 MPa (range from 7,53 to 20,57 MPa). Conclusion: In conclusion, it was observed that the range of shear bond strength values (5,9 to 7,8 MPa) and taken as a parameter by most authors until now is outdated, since higher values of SBS are feasible without, however, causing dental enamel damage after the debonding of the bracket.
