Effect of decision feedback equalizer taps on 3×6- channel mode-wavelength division multiplexing system performance in multimode fiber

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper, the effect of tap configurations in a decision feedback equalizer is investigated for controlling modal dispersion in a 60Gb/s 18-channel mode division multiplexing -wavelength division multiplexing system in a 2.5km multimode fiber on three Laguerre-Gaussian modes and six wavelengths centered at 1550nm. Spectrum analyser diagrams and bit error rate measurements show satisfactory performance for feed forward -feedback tap combinations (10,5), (14,0), (15,6) and (15,10) by effectively s… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the main challenge for Ro-FSO systems is the performance degradation due to low visibility and turbulence, as optical are not capable of penetrating structures and other obstacles [9,10,21,22]. Space division multiplexing (SDM) is a recent spatial diversity strategy transpired by utilizing different eigenmodes in optical fiber as independent channels to create multiple-input-multiple-output systems [22][23][24][25][26][27]. SDM enables the provision of multiple links during harsh weather conditions in case of failure of any of the links and increases the achievable link distance [28][29][30][31][32][33][34].…”

“…In MDM, different modes are used to facilitate the propagation of a various number of modes on different channels generated by various techniques based on optical signal processing [13,14], few-mode fiber [11,15] and modal decomposition methods [16,17] MDM based on switching [18], also multiplexer [12] over optical communication. Moreover, electronic and photonic equalization schemes [19][20][21][22] could possibly be explored and integrated into the system. The other scheme of optimization soft computing algorithm [23][24][25] that can be used in optical communication to improve nonlinearly distortion.…”

“…There are bound to be some irregularities (i.e., ISI) [26] caused by the distortion of signal pulses and modal dispersion. DFE is then used to remove [27] these inter-symbol perturbations optimally [20,21]. These were chosen because the modal power loss becomes minimum at these wavelengths [28].…”
