Effect of colloidal bismuth subcitrate on age related gastric lesions in the rat.

Abstract: The purpose ofthis study was to determine the changes in rat gastric functional morphology that take place with age and to study the action of coiloidal bismuth subcitrate on the age related degeneration of the stomach. At 95 weeks of age erosions were apparent over 80% of the gastric mucosa and this was associated with a significant decline in the numbers and mucus content of the mucosal epithelial cells. The rate of stem cell proliferation in the neck region was also significantly lower than that found in 9 … Show more

“…Moreover, our findings are consistent with our previously published results on age-relat ed reductions in gastric mucosal prostaglan din biosynthesis [4] and with results reported by other investigators [10][11][12]. For instance, Kim et al [10] have shown in rats that, although aging did not affect the basal duode nal bicarbonate secretion, the duodenal bicar bonate response to a fixed load of luminal acid declined progressively with aging.…”

“…For instance, Kim et al [10] have shown in rats that, although aging did not affect the basal duode nal bicarbonate secretion, the duodenal bicar bonate response to a fixed load of luminal acid declined progressively with aging. Hinsull [11] has shown that aged male WAB rats had reduced gastric mucus contents and a reduced number of mucous epithelial cells as compared with young rats, and this was asso ciated with more gastric mucosal ulcerative lesions in aged rats. Twersky et al [12] have recently demonstrated that aged rats had a significantly lower basal gastric epithelial cell proliferation and an impaired proliferative re sponse to chronic ASA treatment as com pared with young rats.…”

“…Our findings extend our previously published results on age-related reductions in gastric mucosal protective prostaglandins [4] and related reports by other investigators [14][15][16]. For instance, Kim et al [14] have shown in rats that the duodenal bicarbonate response to an injurious dose of luminal acid declined progressively with age.…”

“…Hinsull has shown that aged male WAB rats have reductions in the numbers and content of gastric mucosal epithelial cells compared with young male rats, and that this change is associated with gastric mucosal erosions in aged rats 25. Furthermore, the rate of proliferation of stem cells in the neck of the gastric glands is reduced in aged rats 25.…”
