Effect of coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) water extracts on adventitious root development in vegetative propagation of Dracaena purplecompacta L.

Abstract: Propagation by softwood canes and cuttings is preferred as a practical system for vegetative reproduction of many ornamental plant species, despite the advances in tissue culture techniques. Dracaena purplecompacta L. is a species that has a high demand for exports. Conversely, coconut water (CW) is a rich supplement that naturally contains plant growth regulators such as indole acetic acid (IAA). The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of CW extracts containing natural IAA, on adventitious ro… Show more

“…Coconut water contains many nutritional and/or hormonal substances including diphenyl urea, which acts as cytokinin and this growth regulator induces the growth and cell division [19,44] . Others also reported an effective growth and regeneration of plants in CW supplemented medium and this is due to the presence of natural contents of cytokinin and auxin [45] . In the present study, the concentrations of 10 and 20 g L -1 CW supplemented with either half-strength MS medium or VW medium reduced the production of rooting, leaf, fresh weight, dry weight, plant height and survival frequency of Phalaenopsis hybrid 'Pink' shoots after four months of culture in all sucrose concentrations.…”

“…Media added coconut water and IAA resulted in higher root length and root number compared to treatment added BAP. Agampodi and Jayawardena (2008) recorded treatment of coconut water extract contains 143 uM IAA resulting the best root induction and development.…”

“…Another additive, coconut water is a rich supplement that naturally contains diphenyl-urea, a chemical with cytokinin-like activity [29] that supports the growth of somatic embryogenesis. Addition of coconut water in the media help for development of plant propagated in vitro [14,30,31].…”

“…Coconut water contains plant growth regulators and is liberally made use in tissue culture. Earlier researchers have investigated the addition of coconut water in media and observed that CW enhanced the development of embryos in vitro [14,30,31,36].…”
