Effect of chemical pretreatment on dehulling parameters of flaxseed (cv. Garima)

Abstract: In the present study, effects of chemical (ethanol, HCl and sulphuric acid) pretreatment on various dehulling parameters of flaxseed (cv. Garima) including yield, hull, hullability, extraction rate and embryo (dehulled flaxseed) recovery were studied. Pretreated flaxseed, at 3.1 to 3.6 % moisture range (p > 0.05) were dehulled for 60 s in a laboratory model rice polisher/dehulling machine at 2,000 rpm followed by aspiration (hull separation) using a laboratory model aspirator. The study revealed that chemical … Show more

“…The physical dehulling for flaxseed is one of the pretreatment processes to extract flaxseed protein. Wet and dry extraction methods have been developed to remove flaxseed mucilage (Karaca et al, 2011;Kaushik et al, 2016;Lan et al, 2020;Mridula et al, 2014). The dehulling efficiency is highly influenced by various factors, for example the speed, dehulling time, and the moisture in flaxseed (Zheng et al, 2003).…”

“…Dehulling of oilseeds is important to obtain the good quality edible oil, to improve the flavour, to increase the protein content of the meal for food purposes (Mridula et al 2011a, b;Mridula et al 2012;Pohjanheimo et al 2006;Kangas et al 2006). During the dehulling process, a major part of the fibre and certain pigments are removed, which otherwise pass into the meal during the screw pressing and deteriorate its quality.…”

“…Dehulling: Desired amount of flaxseeds were taken from previously cleaned flaxseed batch. They were first pretreated with ethanol according to the method described in literature [13] . These pre-treated seeds were then dehulled using tangential abrasive dehulling device (TADD) to remove hull of the flaxseed at maximum level as previously described [14] .…”
