Effect of Chemical Oxidation on the Interfacial Bonding between Carbon Fibre and Epoxy Resin

Abstract: Polypyrrole (PPy) was deposited on carbon fibres via the oxidation-polymerization of pyrrole (Py) with ferric ions. These PPy-deposited carbon fibres were then made into composite boards with epoxy resin. The interfacial bonding between carbon fibre and epoxy resin was evaluated by measuring the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), tensile strength before and after impact (TAI), and flexural strength. Experimental results show that deposition of PPy can improve the ILSS, tensile strength, and flexural strength.… Show more

“…A lot of methods, such as chemical oxidation [3], anodic oxidation [4][5][6], ozone oxidation [7], plasma oxidation [8,9], sizing or coating treatment [10,11], were being developed to modify CFs and to improve the interfacial properties of CF-reinforced matrix composites. But almost all methods were aiming at polar resin, for example, epoxy and phenolic resin.…”

“…Pyrrole is a five-membered heterocyclic molecule that holds significant importance as an intermediate in organic synthesis . Its high reactivity and excellent solubility make it a valuable component in the production of pharmaceuticals, herbicides, insecticides, fragrances, epoxy resin stabilizers, and polymers. Polypyrrole (PPy) stands out as one of the most commonly used conductive polymers that is highly applicable in diverse fields including sensing, drug delivery, energy storage, and conversion .…”
