Introduction: The present study, investigated the local injection of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeONPs) into Spinal cord injury (SCI) lesions in rats, and the effect on motor performance and neuropathic pain, together with biochemical markers.Methods: 36 adult male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: control group (healthy animals); sham group (laminectomy); SCI group (laminectomy+SCI induction); treatment group (laminectomy + SCI induction + intrathecal injection of 10 µL of CeONPs (1000 µg/mL) immediately after injury). SCI was induced by application of an aneurysm clip at the T12-T13 vertebral region. Immediately after SCI, CeONPs were injected into the treatment group with a Hamilton syringe and micropipet. H&E staining and measurement of the size of the cavity were performed after 6 weeks, and the BBB motor performance test and pain threshold test were performed weekly. GCSF expression, P44/42 MAPK (ERK1/ERK2), P-P44/42 MAPK (ERK1/ERK2), total Tau, total MAG, β-actin were evaluated after 6 weeks.Results: The BBB score and pain threshold improved in animals receiving CeONPs compared with SCI animals. The size of the cavity decreased in the treatment group. GCSF protein expression levels were similar in animals receiving CeONPs compared with the SCI group, but the expression of ERK1/ERK2 and phospho-ERK was lower compared with the SCI group. The expression levels of Tau and MAG were significantly increased in treated animals compared to the SCI group.Conclusion: The use of CeONPs in SCI could improve motor functional recovery, reduce pain and increase nerve cell regeneration.

Objectives Cerium is a member of the rare metals group and widely used in drug delivery, gene therapy, molecular imaging and medicine. In this study, we investigated the effect of different doses of Cerium (IV) oxide (CeO2) during pregnancy on neonatal mice ovaries, as well as its effect on blood biochemical parameters. Methods Thirty pregnant NMRI mice were divided into five groups: Control and 4 groups treated with CeO2 (10, 25, 80, 250 mg/kg.bw i.p) at the GD7 and GD14. The ovarian histological of neonatal (2 and 6 day‐olds), as well as blood serum of neonates at 15‐dpp were analyzed. Results Count of ovarian primordial follicles in neonates at 2 dpp showed a significant decrease in the groups treated with 80 and 250 mg/kg.bw doses of CeO2. There was also a significant decrease in ovarian primordial and primary follicles in neonates at 6‐dpp at 250 mg/kg.bw doses of CeO2 in the control (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in serum levels of malondialdehyde and total antioxidant capacity between the experimental and control groups. Conclusions Our results suggest that the effects of CeO2 on the ovarian tissue of neonatal mice during pregnancy may be dose‐dependent.

The impact of exposing significant mouse organs to cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) has received considerable attention in the literature, but a comprehensive review on this topic is lacking. This review aims to address this gap by examining the influence of CeO2 NPs on the release rate of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in various organs of mice. CeO2 NPs have demonstrated potential therapeutic applications due to their ROS-scavenging abilities, which are relevant to oxidative stress-related diseases. Recent studies investigating the effect of CeO2 NPs on ROS release rate in organs such as the liver, spleen, lung, and brain are highlighted in this article. The findings reveal a complex interaction between CeO2 NPs and the ROS system, influenced by factors such as particle dose, size, and surface chemistry. Furthermore, the impact of CeO2 NPs on ROS release rate is organ-specific and dependent on the tissue microenvironment. The review also addresses the potential toxicity of CeO2 NPs and emphasizes the need for further research to better comprehend their mechanisms of action and long-term effects. By providing valuable insights into the influence of CeO2 NPs on ROS release rate in mice organs, this review holds significant implications for the therapeutic applications of CeO2 NPs in oxidative stress-related diseases.
