Effect of [C n mim][Br] Based Ionic Liquids on the Aggregation Behavior of Tetradecyltrimethylammonium Bromide in Aqueous Medium

Abstract: In order to gain insight into the role of environmentally benign imidazolium based ionic liquids (ILs) to alter the physicochemical properties of single chain cationic surfactants, we have investigated the effect of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C 6 mim][Br]) and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C 8 mim][Br]) on the aggregation behavior of aqueous tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of TTAB at different concentrations of ILs was determined through c… Show more

“…The CMC value was determined from the break point of the maximum bounding height/CA versus the changed concentration curve. The determined CMC value of TTAB using the maximum bounding height (2.32 mM) and the CA method (1.91 mM) were obtained, which were in good agreement with its theoretic value of 2.1 mM with a relative error of 10% and 9%, respectively [ 26 , 27 , 28 ]. The measurement error might be improved by the usage of more precise instrument and proficient operator.…”

“…Digital automatic refractometer (Abbemat 300) from Anton Paar was used to measure the refractive index. Details of the experimental setup and measuring procedure have been given in previous publications [7][8][9][10]. Solid-state built in thermostat controls the temperature by ±0.001 K in DSA 5000 and by ±0.0001 K in Abbemat 300.…”

“…The decrease in surface activity of the drug can be understood with the fact that both drug and IL are positively charged, so these molecules of similar charge try to remain separate from each other at the surface monolayer. Thus, the space between monomers at the surface increases ( increases) and the surface activity decreases [ 58 ]. Another reason for the decreasing value after the addition of IL may be the partial adsorption of IL at the surface.…”
