Effect of Bone Marrow Versus Adipose Tissue Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on the Pancreas of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes Mellitus Type I in Adult Male Rats (Histological Study)

Abstract: Background: Diabetes Mellitus (D.M.) is a major health problem affecting more than 200 million worldwide. The ideal treatment for autoimmune type I diabetes is regeneration of endogenous β-cells which could be achieved by mesenchymal stem cells transplantation. Aim of the work:This work aimed to compare the effect of intravenous bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) on Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type I diabetes in albino rats. Material an… Show more

“…These changes are close to the observations of the congested blood vessels and darkly stained pyknotic nuclei of some diabetic rat acinar cells [46,42] that observed nearly all acinar cells in diabetic rats were swollen with small vacuoles. These results are consistent with Nurdiana et al [42] that revealed histological destruction of the pancreatic islets of diabetic rats.…”

“…Additionally, BMMSCs injection has been demonstrated to successfully reconstruct the kidney injury associated with severe acute pancreatitis [Chen et al, 2013], treat hypertensive nephropathy [Mohamed and Samak, 2017], and improve rat pancreatic alterations after i.p. injection of streptozotocin [Omar and Aboulkhair, 2017]. Furthermore, BM-MSCs regenerated the parotid gland after ovariectomy in rats [Abd El-Haleem et al, 2018].…”

“…Their ability to regenerate damaged pancreas has not been previously studied. However, transplantation of rat's BM-MSCs to pancreatic islets could differentiate into functionally competent pancreatic β-cells [Omar and Aboulkhair, 2017]. In addition, these cells have been demonstrated to regenerate the thyroid gland in mice exposed to X-rays [Mikhailov et al, 2012].…”
