Effect of Bamboo Leaf Extract on Antioxidant Status and Cholesterol Metabolism in Broiler Chickens

Abstract: Simple SummaryCholesterol is an important lipid substance in organisms. As the precursor of bile acid, steroid hormones and vitamin D3, cholesterol plays important roles in lipid metabolism. Chicken is among the most consumed meat products worldwide; however, its cholesterol level is higher than that of other meat products. High cholesterol in a human diet will increase the risk of atherosclerosis. In addition, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is susceptible to be oxidized, which will cause the death of bro… Show more

“…Bamboo is found worldwidely, and its leaves are applied to medicinal and culinary roles in China ( 6 ). Different parts of bamboo, such as leaves and shoots, have enormous therapeutic potential capacities, and might provide a natural and eco-friendly method in protecting health in a sustainable method, although bamboo has been rarely studied for its antioxidant capacity ( 1 ).…”

“…An increase in the antioxidant capacity of hyperlipidaemic mice was reported after they were supplemented with BLE ( 12 ). It was also found that BLE supplementation significantly improved the growth performance and antioxidant capacity of birds and alleviated oxidative stress by increasing the contents of antioxidant in serum and liver ( 6 ). Flavonoids have remarkable antioxidant activity owing to their reactions with free radicals, in which they serve as hydrogen donors ( 13 ).…”

“…Many studies have observed that bamboo extracts containing polysaccharides can reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as hypercholesterolemia and oxidative stress [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 ]. A higher total cholesterol concentration (T-Cho) was detected in the control group serum than in the serum of the group fed a normal diet.…”

“…Also, under thermoneutral conditions, Dong et al, (2011) reported that the dietary polysavone supplementation of a natural extract from alfalfa (1.5 g/kg) enhanced SOD activity in broiler serum and liver. Shen et al, (2019) showed that supplementing the chicken diet with 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0g bamboo leaf extract enhanced the antioxidant level both in serum and liver as a result of amplifying the expression of SOD, GSH-Px and CAT mRNA and inhibiting lipid oxidation. Ghabru et al, (2018) showed that including sea buckthorn leaves (10000 ppm) in the broiler diet increased SOD, CAT and GSH activities in liver and blood.…”
