Effect of BaCO3 on C3A hydration

Abstract: 7Ba ions are known to immobilise sulfates by forming BaSO 4 . The use of witherite 8 (BaCO 3 ) as a full or partial substitute for gypsum to regulate C 3 A (3CaO•Al 2 O 3 ) 9 hydration was consequently studied with a view to establishing its correct dosage in 10 sulfate-resistant cements presently under development. 11 12The hydration rate of synthetic C 3 A was determined in the presence of varying 13 percentages of gypsum, witherite, and gypsum+witherite by running conduction 14 calorimetry analyses on early… Show more

“…The FTIR analyses (Table 6) confirmed the XRD results. The infrared spectrum for paste C 3 A exhibited the absorption lines characteristic of katoite, some (in the 790 cm -1 -820 cm -1 and 520 cm -1 -530 cm -1 ranges) overlapping with the signals for the remaining anhydrous C 3 A [16]. Slight carboaluminate contamination was likewise observed.…”

“…The signal at −81.5ppm denoting Al uptake by the C-S-H gel was more intense in the 7% HsT (1:2) than in the 7% HcG (1:2) paste. In another vein, Gismera et al [32] contended that monocarboaluminate was present, attributing the signal at 3540 cm −1 to its OH groups. The wide signal with a small peak observed in this study may have been indicative of such a presence.…”
