Spodoptera frugiperda was first reported in Africa in 2016 and has since become a serious threat to maize/cereal production on the continent. Current control of the pest relies on synthetic chemical insecticides, which can negatively impact the environment and promote the development of resistance when used indiscriminately. Therefore, great attention is being paid to the development of safer alternatives. In this study, several biorational products and a semi-synthetic insecticide were evaluated. Two household soaps (“Palmida” and “Koto”) and a detergent (“So Klin”) were first tested for their efficacy against the larvae under laboratory conditions. Then, the efficacy of the most effective soap was evaluated in field conditions, along with PlantNeem (neem oil), Dezone (diatomaceous earth), and Emacot 19 EC (emamectin benzoate), in two districts, N’Dali and Adjohoun, located, respectively, in northern and southern Benin. The soaps and the detergent were highly toxic t second-instar larvae with 24 h lethal concentrations (LC50) of 0.46%, 0.44%, and 0.37% for So Klin, Koto, and Palmida, respectively. In field conditions, the biorational insecticides produced similar or better control than Emacot 19 EC. However, the highest maize grain yields of 7387 and 5308 kg/ha were recorded, respectively, with Dezone (N’Dali) and Emacot 19 EC (Adjohoun). A cost-benefit analysis showed that, compared to an untreated control, profits increased by up to 90% with the biorational insecticides and 166% with Emacot 19 EC. Therefore, the use of Palmida soap at 0.5% concentration, neem oil at 4.5 L/ha, and Dezone at 7.5 kg/ha could provide an effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable management of S. frugiperda in maize.

Background: Fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) is native of America is now considered as invading pest in India. It causes damage to maize, wheat, rice, sugarcane, etc. The aim of this study was evaluation of neem oil in combination with wetting agent (SuperStiker) as larvicide against Spodoptera frugiperda (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera). Methods: The present study was conducted to evaluate the larvicidal effect of neem oil (WA391: Nim Q) with combination of wetting agents (WA306: SuperStiker). Topical application of different combination of Neem Oil and SuperStiker along with control was given to selected days (2, 4, 6 and 12 days) larvae. Results: The result revealed that the highest mortality percentage was recorded with the combination of 2 ml Neem oil + 5 ml of SuperStiker in all selected larvae after 24 hours of exposure. Conclusion: Hence use of Nim Q and SuperStiker in combination was most effective for control FAW population. Therefore, this kind of study will motivate the use of more ecofriendly, less toxic control measuresto decrease the FAW population in agriculture field.

Spodoptera frugiperda merupakan hama invasif yang menyebabkan kegagalan panen pada tanaman jagung. Salah satu alternatif pengendalian ramah lingkungan yang terus dikembangkan terhadap S. frugiperda yaitu pengendalian dengan insektisida nabati. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas sinergis campuran insektisida nabati minyak A. indica dan R. communis . Desain percobaan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok terdiri dari minyak A. indica, R. communis , serta campurannya dengan lima taraf konsentrasi dan satu kontrol yang diulang empat kali. Pengujian menggunakan metode residu pakan pada larva instar II selama 48 jam, selanjutnya daun perlakuan diganti dengan pakan tanpa perlakuan hingga larva berkembang menjadi pupa. Hubungan konsentrasi minyak nabati dengan kematian serangga uji dianalisis menggunakan analisis probit, sedangkan peubah lainnya dianalisis dengan sidik ragam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan minyak A. indica, R. communis, serta campurannya bersifat toksik terhadap larva S. frugiperda. Aktivitas campuran minyak A. indica dan R. communis pada taraf LC50 waktu pengamatan 2-8 hari setelah perlakuan (HSP) bersifat antagonistic, pada 10 HSP bersifat aditif, dan pada 12-18 HSP bersifat sinergistik lemah, sementara pada taraf LC95 waktu pengamatan 2-8 HSP bersifat antagonistic dan pada 10-18 HSP bersifat sinergistik kuat. Selain itu, minyak nabati tersebut memiliki aktivitas penghambatan perkembangan, penurunan fekunditas dan fertilitas, serta penurunan umur imago jantan dan betina S. frugiperda. Dengan demikian, campuran minyak nabati A. indica dan R. communis berpotensi dikembangkan sebagai insektisida alternatif pengendalian S. frugiperda.
