Effect of Antioxidants on Outcome of Testicular Torsion in Rats of Different Ages

Abstract: Testicular morphology was altered less in rats when torsion occurred earlier in life, that is during puberty. Treatment with antioxidants improved contralateral spermatozoid production and some fertility parameters. Each antioxidant also prevented testicular morphology alterations after testicular torsion. Prepubertal rats benefited most from antioxidant treatment.

“…[42] Positive effects of antioxidants on oxidative stress parameters and different tissues in oxidative stress conditions, such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, [43] type 2 diabetes mellitus, [44] ulcerative colitis, [45] and testicular torsion, have been shown. In this context, for preventing harmful effects of oxidative stress, many antioxidant agents, such as vitamin E, melatonin, retinol, β-carotene, omega-3, resveratrol, allopurinol, melatonin, Nacetylcysteine, zinc aspartate, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester, vitamin C, coenzyme Q10, and acetylcysteine have been used with different success rates.…”

“…The kidneys were harvested, weighed, and their volumes measured by the Scherle's method 17,18 ; then, the organs were fixed by immersion in 4% buffered formaldehyde according to our laboratory routine. Samples were collected from the cortical region of these 64 kidneys and were processed by routine histological methods for stereological analysis.…”

“…Potency or the ability of the male rat to mate was calculated as the ratio of female rats mated to the number of female rats exposed for mating  100. 13,24 The fertility index was calculated as the ratio of the number of implantation sites to the number of corpora lutea. 13,24 Fecundity was calculated as the ratio of the number of male rats responsible for at least 1 viable fetus to the total number of male rats exposed for mating  100.…”
