Effect of Anisotropic Graphite on Discharge Performance of Positive Plates in Pasted‐Type Lead‐Acid Batteries

Abstract: For improvement of the discharge performance of pasted-type lead-acid batteries for cycle service use, anisotropic graphite is added to the positive paste, and its effect on the discharge performance of the positive plates has been examined. The 6apacity of the positive plates increased remarkably and also cycle life was improved by the addition of graphite. These effects can be attributed to the increase in porosity of the positive active mass due to expansion of the graphite by anodic oxidation.

“…Anodic expansion of graphite additives in PAM may account for the increase in porosity, as previously reported. 21 An expansion mechanism of graphite inside the PAM has been proposed by other studies and attributed to formation of a graphite bisulfate intercalated compound. 21,22 If those findings are applicable, then ABG-1005 graphite expanded the least and LBG-2025 graphite expanded the most.…”

“…Tokunaga et al observed that the 0.1-2% addition of anisotropic graphite to PAM improves the capacity and cycle life explained by increased porosity of PAM caused by graphite expansion during oxidation [32]. This allows for a better access of sulfuric acid to the active mass.…”
